Little Elm is a peninsula town. Lewisville Lake wraps around most of its edges, the older streets run down toward the water near the park, and everything in between filled in quickly once the bridges made it easy to get here. Paloma Creek, Union Park, and Sunset Pointe went up fast enough that whole blocks share a build year, and the lots that came with them are efficient: enough room for a proper outdoor space, not enough to waste any of it.
By seven on a June evening the sun is nowhere near overhead, and that is the hour these backyards actually get used. Low western light comes in flat underneath the beams, off the water and back up off a pool surface, landing on precisely the chairs people are sitting in. Shade at that hour has to work vertically rather than horizontally, which is a different piece of design than a roof on its own provides.
A great many of these yards already hold a pool, put in when the neighborhood was new, and it takes the middle of the lot. What is left is an L of usable ground rather than an open rectangle, and it brings in a rule that catches people out: the pool barrier has to remain a barrier. A cover, a bar top, or a run of seat wall set against the fence hands a five year old a route over it, so the layout gets checked against that before anything is priced.

The sun drops in from the west across the lake, passes under the beams almost horizontally, and bounces back up off the water and the concrete, so a cover sized for noon leaves the evening more or less as it was. We take the real bearing of the back of the house and put the shading where the light is: a deeper projection or a partial screen on the west flank, a retractable shade on the exposed bay, and a floor and ceiling chosen to absorb glare instead of throwing it around.

Nearly always, though the shape of it gets decided by what the pool left behind. We measure the clear ground between the coping, the equipment pad, and the fence, stake the footprint so you can walk the real dimension, and confirm that nothing in the plan gives a child a way over the pool barrier.
Will a patio cover fix the evening sun off the lake?
Only partly on its own. A roof takes care of the overhead hours, while low western sun is stopped by something vertical, so it usually takes a screen, a deeper projection, or a cedar slat panel on the west side to make six to eight in the evening genuinely comfortable.
Does the wind off the lake change anything?
It changes hardware and fabric choices more than it changes the structure itself. Anything soft on the west side is specified to retract rather than to stand up to a gust, and fans and fixtures are chosen as wet rated for a spot that takes weather driven in off open water.
